Something happened in Peccioli this weekend that goes beyond the mere account of an event.
Something happened that speaks to the true meaning of accessible hospitality.
On Friday, May 1, Roberto Vitali took part in the first edition of the Peccioli Gravel Clinic (https://peccioligravel.it/) Italy’s first Gravel Academy. An event that, right from the start, says a lot about this destination’s vision: innovation, sports, the local area, and culture coming together.
Peccioli is no stranger to this approach. For over three years, we have been working together with the Municipality of Peccioli, Belvedere S.p.A. , and the PeccioliPer Foundation to bring Destination4All® to life — a concrete model for a tourist destination capable of evolving, growing, and opening up to cater to all tourists by offering a higher quality of experiences for everyone.
A destination known for its extraordinary land art installations, but which is now also gaining recognition for the quality and variety of its bike trails.
Thanks to an innovative off-road vehicle, the FOXX by ProActive provided by Medimec, I was able to do something that isn’t always a given: set off together with the others. Same pace. Same route. Same experience.
Don’t follow. Don’t conform. But share. I crossed the hills, climbing and descending dirt paths, gravel, and earth. I felt the ground beneath me, the wind, the scents. I “caressed” the landscape. And in that moment I understood—once again—what inclusion truly means: not creating separate paths, but ensuring access to the experience, even with the necessary tools, including innovative ones.
What we experienced in Peccioli was no accident.
It is the result of meticulous work.
Inclusion means providing people with objective and transparent information so that everyone can choose—based on their own abilities and accessibility needs—the experiences they want to have.
It’s not just assistance. It’s freedom. And that is precisely the goal of Destination4All®: to make accessible tourism a standard offering, by raising awareness of what’s available, guiding destinations toward continuous improvement, and helping businesses become increasingly successful.
The experience was further enriched the following day by the opportunity to try out sustainable and inclusive mobility solutions, thanks to a partnership with Medimec and Aspasso Bike, which provided vehicles that allowed many people—residents and tourists alike—to test out mobility aids on the road, experiencing the freedom to move about, ride a bike path, or, as I did on May 1st, independently participate in a full-fledged sporting event.
Their contribution has highlighted a key point: today, there are technologies and solutions that can restore a sense of freedom to far more people than we realize.
It’s not just about disabilities. We’re talking about an aging population, temporary conditions, and mobility, sensory, or cognitive accessibility needs.
We’re talking about people who need places that are ready to welcome them.
People who want to experience a region, a destination, or an experience—regardless of their accessibility needs.
Peccioli was the first town in Italy to make accessibility a cornerstone of its tourism offerings by adopting the Destination4All® Charter of Values, a charter approved by FISH (the Italian Federation of Associations of People with Disabilities and Their Families).
This pioneering model demonstrates how accessibility has become an integral part of the region’s sustainable growth.
Everything Peccioli has to offer, from culture and sports to outdoor activities: rolling hills, a welcoming atmosphere, and the freedom to explore the area at your own pace.
That is what makes Peccioli special.
A village that doesn’t just talk about inclusion—it makes it tangible, measurable, and replicable.
Today, it stands as a model of inclusion, thanks to Destination4All® and the shared vision of theMunicipality of Peccioli, Belvedere spa, and the PeccioliPer Foundation. This journey doesn’t end here, and it will soon bring many new developments for both tourists and the residents of Peccioli.
